Rafael Zen is a Brazilian-Canadian interdisciplinary media artist working across sound art, performance, multilingual writing, and interactive systems. Their practice focuses on works in which sound, voice, language, and the body remain open to transmutation, composing through embodied technologies and glitched personas.
A central concern of Zen’s practice is how digital processing, avatars, and audiovisual assemblages can support embodied experimentation. They explore how failure opens alternative ways of sensing, creating speculative languages that imagine more-than-human bodies and non-fixed forms of identity. Their work is informed by queer futurity and the understanding that identity is produced through relation and movement: a practice rather than an essence.
Zen’s research focuses on the malfunctioning cyborg as a framework for interdisciplinary research-creation. Rather than understanding the cyborg as a seamless integration of body and machine, they approach it as a site of breakdown and instability. Failure functions not as error but as a critical methodology that exposes the social and technological systems through which cultural difference is produced and perceived.
They build and perform with DIY wearables, noise-making masks, and electronic systems that function not only as instruments but as unstable collaborators. Working across sound, theatre, and new media, Zen uses distortion and repetition to generate fragmented loops of media and spoken word, continuously provoking the body’s instability through wearable technologies, Max/MSP, 4D sound processing, multichannel and intermedia setups, analog and digital synthesizers, noise and sound collage, MIDI controllers, found objects, open-source interfaces, and sampled voice material.
