Homa Samiei, a Toronto-based composer, pianist, educator, and artistic director, was born in Tehran. She co-founded the Najva Ensemble, Chaam Trio, and Himeh Cultural House. She holds a bachelor’s degree in composition from the Art University of Tehran, a master’s degree in community music from Wilfrid Laurier University, and a master’s degree in composition from the University of Toronto.
Homa has performed globally with the Najva Ensemble and released the album ‘Raha(free)’ in 2015. Her compositions have been featured at festivals like the Lucca Contemporary Music Festival and Tehran Contemporary Sounds. She has collaborated with ensembles such as the International Contemporary Ensemble and Thin Edge New Music Collective. With Chaam Trio, homa has performed at Array Music, Heliconian Club, Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, etc.
Homa bridges Eastern and Western elements by blending Persian cultural roots with Western classical and contemporary music. Her piece ‘Mooyeh’ premiered in 2023 with the University of Toronto’s wind symphony. She held a composer-in-residence position at the University of Toronto’s SA Choir and premiered “The Bird Was Just the Bird” with them.
Homa has curated music events like ‘Promise of Freedom,’ ‘Flourishing Moment,’ and ‘Sound of Iran,’ demonstrating her commitment to fostering musical connections and cultural exchanges.
