Cristina Hernandez

Mexican singer-songwriter.

Her musical roots started when she sang with her father and joined the school’s choir, participating in different festivals and music contests.

She has been in the music industry professionally since 2009.

She studied music for five years at Fermatta Music Academy from 2009 to 2014, majoring in voice and minoring in composition. During that time, she recorded EP Demos and singles in collaboration with her colleague’s performing at her university cultural events.

With the Alebrijes band, she performs at several venues across the central region of Mexico, like Festival del Maiz, Feria del Marisco, the International book fair, and events with more than two thousand people.

She was the singer-director of “Que Bonita es mi Tierra,” a Mexican vernacular musical with over thirty people on stage.

In 2017 she moved to Mexico City, where she joined Ciudad de Gnomos Band, singing for them their first demo and Official Video released in 2020.

She arrived in St. John’s in August 2021, continuing her music career in Canada.

In March 2022, she made her Newfoundland debut by performing for the Multicultural Women’s Organization of Newfoundland and Labrador on “International Women’s Day,” premiering her new song “Flowers in the wind.”

In the same month, she participated as a panellist in the 2022 MusicNL Newcomer Musician Panel.

As a singer and musician, she has been part of different events with other artists, opening for  Ana & Eric at the NL Folk Festival, creating a Chinese-Mexican fusion with Jing Xia, and a duo with Ukrainian pianist Alla Savchenko.

With Humberto Picolli, she collaborated on creating three songs that premiered for The Global Music Series at “The Rooms.”

 

First light Arts invited her to be part of her first songwriter’s circle, “Songs of the Land,” singing next to Jenelle Duval, Jamie Jackman, and Kattie Baggs.

As an activist and feminist, she has been performing for the Iranian community premiering her new song Woman with her colleagues.

In 2023 she and Noel Gutierrez, a Cuban guitarist, performed Cuban and Mexican traditional music for Judy Foote, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, at the Governor’s house.

Cristina is the current lead singer of Isla Son Latin Ensemble, with the master guitarist Sylvie Proulx performing Cuban traditional music in St. John’s.

She has been interviewed by Barb Walsh for the Global Frequencies ANC podcast Krissy Holmes for St. John’s Morning Show, Heather Barret for Weekend AM, and Arlette Lazareko invited her to be part of a Documentary for the Collage of North Atlantic.

With her album “Inicio,” released in August 2022, she was nominated as a Global Music Artist of the year for the 2022 MusicNL award.

Matt Dines and Baraka invited her to collaborate on their new project for CBC.

Now she is working on new songs and projects and exploring new musical fusions with Canadian, Mexican and other nations worldwide artists.
