Heidi Holmes’ practice begins with symptoms that develop within a body and then exist outside of a body as material. These symptom to material installations encompass reconstruction, sculpture and atmosphere and reference domestic decoration, medicine, bodily functions, aging and feminist theory. Recent exhibitions have included a reimagining of a hot flush through a collection of cooking pots continuously boiling water, an ode to lubricant through an installation that repeated wet and dry gestures and an exploration of Premarin – the most widely used oestrogen hormone, produced through the drying of pregnant horse urine; with horse-hair sprouting walls. Currently, the symptom-materials in these works reflect the conditions of Menopause, inclusive of hormone-withdrawl Menopause and Perimenopause. Formerly, these materials were determined by the annals of failed fertility and childlessness.
