Andromeda Monk is a composer and improviser who plays woodwinds and electronic instruments. She studied saxophone at Capilano University’s Jazz Program for two years, departing to tour in various bands, including Olenka & the Autumn Lovers. She spent two years recording her avant-pop album Breathing Machines on which she sings songs of estrangement from the body over disjointed woodwind arrangements, releasing the effort in 2018 alongside another version of the album arranged for Capilano’s 17-piece Narwhal ensemble. Shortly thereafter she became more interested in noise music, leading to several years of improvising on the no-input mixing board and the releases Moon Test and Image. During the lockdown years she switched to synthesizers and completed a sound art residency with the Media Arts Committee, for which she produced the track Scaffolding on the theme of holding space. Since the return of live music she has played at several festivals including Suoni per il Popolo, Vancouver Jazz Festival, and Active/Passive, often appearing solo and composing unique music for each show. Most recently she has been working on integrating her musical selves, beginning to play woodwinds again alongside electronics. She lives on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.
