These sketches incorporate the materials that are utilized to create the Bègèna and Krar as a means of reconciling the intentional incompleteness of this acoustic instrument building project with myself. Through which, I familiarize myself with these materials in preparation for when I’ll have the culturally significant means and capacity to transform these conceptualizations into modern day instruments that don’t compromise their roots, are intentional and ritualistic in the creation process, and honour Ethiopian orthodox folklore and mysticism.
About the Artist
DANI YOUR DARLING is a youth multi-disciplinary artist known for their practice as a performer, vocalist, songwriter, producer, composer, curator, and affinity with visual mediums. Their intuitive artistic and curatorial practice is informed by their background in community organizing, exploring narratives surrounding Afro-pessimism, Afro-futurism, abolition, Black queerness, the mundane, disability justice, diasporic return, Land Back situated in the African continent, and their relationship with Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. DANI YOUR DARLING has performed and had their art exhibited at grassroot organizations such as the Vancouver Black Library, Unity Arts Collective, Art Ecosystems, Britannia Art Gallery, Hatch Art Gallery, and many others.
